Founded 51 years ago, our organization honors the distinguished actor, director, and producer Frank Silvera. We are dedicated to supporting emerging and established playwrights as they share stories from the African diaspora in the Americas and other historically marginalized communities. Established in 1973 by playwright Garland Lee Thompson, Sr., actor/director Morgan Freeman, actor/director Billie Allen Henderson, and journalist/radio host Clayton Riley, the Frank Silvera Writers' Workshop (FSWW) has become one of the most vital platforms for nurturing the voices of Black playwrights.
The Workshop, as it's affectionately known, provides valuable resources, including virtual play readings with professional actors, directors, and Zoom producers, script development, dramaturgy, plus feedback from experienced theatre professionals to help advance the works and their authors. FSWW remains committed to promoting diverse voices and bridging cultural divides through the power of theatre and storytelling.
